## In brief

- Drivers in Los Angeles can now be ticketed for going just 11 mph over the posted speed limit, because the cameras are set to photograph license plates at that threshold [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days).
- The fine is $50 for speeds 11 to 15 mph over the limit [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days).
- Under California AB 645, every newly activated camera must have a 60-day warning period before fines are imposed [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

## A ticket at 11 mph over

Drivers in Los Angeles can now be ticketed for going just 11 mph over the posted speed limit, because the cameras are set to photograph license plates at that threshold [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). All 125 cameras are set to be activated by the end of the year [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation announced the speed camera program earlier in the year [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). Once activated, the cameras will photograph the license plates of speeding vehicles [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

## How the tickets work

The fine is $50 for speeds 11 to 15 mph over the limit [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). Drivers receive a notice of violation in the mail within 15 days of being photographed [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

Camera tickets do not add points to a driver's license or get reported to auto insurers [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/). The system works more like a parking ticket [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

## The warning period and the pilot

Under California AB 645, every newly activated camera must have a 60-day warning period before fines are imposed [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

The program begins a five-year pilot period [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). After that, a report on safety and economic impact goes to the state legislature [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days).

## Why the city says it is doing this

LADOT says speeding is one of the leading causes of serious injuries and deaths on city streets [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). Around one in five fatal crashes in the city of Los Angeles were directly attributed to speeding in 2024 [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days).

LADOT states the goal of the program is safer streets, more lives saved, and fewer severe injuries [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days).

The national numbers are larger. Nearly 36,640 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the US in 2025, according to an NHTSA statistical projection [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/). California accounted for an estimated 3,630 of those deaths [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

## What it means for you

If you drive in Los Angeles, the cameras are set to photograph your plate at 11 mph or more over the posted limit [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). A ticket arrives by mail within 15 days of the photo [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

The fine is $50 if you were 11 to 15 mph over [[1]](https://www.thedrive.com/news/la-just-powered-up-speed-cameras-tickets-of-up-to-500-start-getting-mailed-in-less-than-60-days). It adds no points to your license and is not reported to your auto insurer [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).

Each newly activated camera must have a 60-day warning period before fines are imposed [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/). All 125 cameras are set to be active by the end of the year [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-news/new-la-speed-cameras-rolling-out-this-month-across-city/).
