## The news in brief

Tesla stock fell about 2% after the company scrapped plans to sell the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html) The cancellation ends a Cybertruck reservation process that began in 2019, so it hits every buyer who put money down in those two markets. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html)

Tesla has officially cancelled the Cybertruck for the two countries, and reservation holders are being emailed that their orders are void and deposits will be refunded. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) Tesla will no longer build the Cybertruck for either Australia or New Zealand. [[3]](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/10/23/tesla-gives-up-on-cybertruck-in-australia-company-says-it-will-refund-all-deposits-it-has-collected-since-2019-for-the-troubled-truck/) CarExpert reports that the truck has been removed from Tesla's Australian website. ## What the email says

Tesla's email to reservation holders states that plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued and that the reservation cannot be fulfilled. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) Tesla says customers will get a full refund for any payments made, with refunds processed within 30 days. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) The deposit to be returned is $150. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html)

Buyers who switch to a new Model 3 or Model Y are eligible for a complimentary year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), valued at A$1,788. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html)

## Why the truck never made it

The Cybertruck is built only in left-hand drive. Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Japan all need right-hand drive, and Australia also requires certification under its own design rules. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) Adapting the truck for these markets would have required additional engineering to meet local driving requirements. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html)

The money side looks hard too. The economics of the Australia and New Zealand program may have been difficult to justify given the relatively small pickup market and the investment needed to modify the vehicle. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html) EV Central estimates the Cybertruck would have cost about A$130,000 before on-road costs, in a large pickup segment that sells about 10,000 vehicles a year. [[3]](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/10/23/tesla-gives-up-on-cybertruck-in-australia-company-says-it-will-refund-all-deposits-it-has-collected-since-2019-for-the-troubled-truck/)

Demand at home has also cooled. Cox Automotive data cited by Seeking Alpha showed US Cybertruck sales falling about 63% year over year to roughly 5,400 units in Q3 2025. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html) Tesla delivered 8,295 'Other Models' in Q3 2026, a category that is now almost entirely Cybertruck since Model S and Model X production ended. ## A long wait with mixed signals

Australians began putting down A$150 to reserve the Cybertruck in November 2019. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) A crowdsourced survey of 2020 reservations ranked Australia third behind the US and Canada, with about 3% of all Cybertruck reservations. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) EV Central reports that tens of thousands of Australians reserved the truck between 2019 and 2021, a figure Tesla has not released. [[3]](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/10/23/tesla-gives-up-on-cybertruck-in-australia-company-says-it-will-refund-all-deposits-it-has-collected-since-2019-for-the-troubled-truck/)

Tesla quietly closed the Australian reservation page in May 2022, and it did not refund anyone at the time. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) In 2024 Tesla shipped a Cybertruck to Australia for a display tour, and Elon Musk told shareholders that year that the truck might be certified for other markets sometime the next year. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) CarExpert reports that Tesla Australia imported a single Cybertruck in 2024. [[3]](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/10/23/tesla-gives-up-on-cybertruck-in-australia-company-says-it-will-refund-all-deposits-it-has-collected-since-2019-for-the-troubled-truck/)

## Where the Cybertruck does sell

Cybertruck deliveries started in South Korea and the UAE, followed by configurators in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Israel. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) The Cybertruck remains blocked in the EU, mainly for pedestrian safety reasons. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/)

## What it means for you

If you hold a Cybertruck reservation in Australia or New Zealand, your order is void and you should expect an email from Tesla. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) That email says the reservation cannot be fulfilled. [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/) Your $150 deposit is due back within 30 days, and Tesla says customers will get a full refund for any payments made. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html) [[2]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/23/tesla-cancels-cybertruck-australia-new-zealand/)

If you want a Tesla anyway, switching to a new Model 3 or Model Y brings a complimentary year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), valued at A$1,788. [[1]](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/tesla-stock-drops-cybertruck-exit-181801418.html)
