## The lower floor

Tesla now expects 2026 capital spending above $20 billion, down from the above $25 billion it has guided since April, and its stock fell 3.5% in late trading in New York after the spending cut was announced. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals) If you follow Tesla's build-out plans, the new number resets what the company says it will spend this year. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

The change appeared in the 10-Q filed Wednesday, not in the shareholder letter released the same day. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) Anyone who read only the letter would have missed it. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

## How the guidance moved

Tesla started 2026 guiding to about $20 billion in capex. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) In April it raised that to more than $25 billion. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

In July, CFO Vaibhav Taneja reiterated the capex figure, and Elon Musk called 2026 a massive capex year. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) The new floor puts the guidance back near where the year began. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

## What Tesla has actually spent

Tesla has spent $13.01 billion on capex so far in 2026. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) By quarter, that is $2.49 billion in Q1, $5.79 billion in Q2 and $4.73 billion in Q3. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

Reaching $25 billion would have required about $12 billion of capex in Q4 alone, more than double Tesla's biggest quarter. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) The new $20 billion floor requires only about $7 billion in Q4. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

Q3 capex of $4.73 billion was also below the expected $7.95 billion. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals)

## Cash flow and unpaid bills

Tesla reported $6.26 billion in Q3 operating cash flow and $1.53 billion in free cash flow after capex. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) Without the $2.59 billion working capital contribution, Q3 free cash flow would have been about negative $1.06 billion. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

Accounts payable rose $1.92 billion in Q3, and accrued liabilities rose $1.95 billion, including $722 million more in accrued purchases. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) At the end of September, Tesla had $3.67 billion of equipment and construction spending in liabilities, meaning it was booked but not yet paid. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

Counting the $1.03 billion increase in unpaid capex, Q3 free cash flow was closer to $500 million. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

Tesla also billed SpaceX $588 million for Megapacks that have not been delivered, and SpaceX had not paid that amount at quarter-end. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

## Financing and the earnings report

The capex cut came a month after Tesla signed $30 billion of new credit facilities. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) They include a $20 billion delayed-draw term loan maturing in 2029 and $10 billion of revolving credit replacing a $5 billion facility. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) Tesla obtained the $30 billion in new loans and credit lines to help it grow and make more cars. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals)

On earnings, Tesla reported Q3 earnings of 48 cents per share versus the 44 cents Wall Street expected. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals) Q3 revenue of $28.05 billion came in slightly short of expectations. ## Where spending still rises

Taneja said spending will still rise as Tesla builds a chip plant, upgrades computing gear, and expands its Cybercab robotaxi fleet, solar lines, and Optimus humanoid robot output. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals) Musk noted it will likely take until the end of 2027 to fix Optimus supply chain hurdles, training data needs, and hand design issues. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals)

Haris Khurshid, chief investment officer at Karobaar Capital, questioned whether the lower outlay means project delays. [[2]](https://www.tipranks.com/news/tesla-stock-slips-as-elon-musk-cuts-2026-spending-target-by-5-billion-and-pushes-back-robot-goals)

## What it means for you

If you track Tesla's spending, read the 10-Q as well as the shareholder letter, because the capex change appeared only in the filing. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) The guidance now reads above $20 billion for 2026, down from above $25 billion. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

If you watch cash flow, note that Q3 free cash flow of $1.53 billion was helped by a $2.59 billion working capital contribution. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/) Unpaid capex of $3.67 billion sits in liabilities, and counting the $1.03 billion rise in unpaid capex puts Q3 free cash flow closer to $500 million. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)

If you watch Q4, the new floor needs only about $7 billion of spending, against the $13.01 billion spent so far. [[1]](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/tesla-cuts-2026-capex-guidance-q3-cash-flow/)
